Simplifying the ERDAS IMAGINE Interface

In 2010, when we introduced the ribbon to the ERDAS IMAGINE interface, our goal was to make the new user experience as simple and intuitive as possible.

We had many lengthy design sessions on how to eliminate the number of clicks for commonly used functions and much debate on where each button belonged on the interface.  Through this process it became widely apparent that we needed a way for each user to be able to place their most used functions in a common place, which later became the “My Workflow” tab.  This allowed for any control on the interface to be placed on a single tab so you could easily access your most commonly used functions without switching tabs and driving through menus.

Making the ERDAS IMAGINE Interface Even More Intuitive

Custom Spatial Modeler Layout

Custom Spatial Modeler Layout

We are hoping to simplify the experience even further through full ribbon customization.  This will allow all available tabs to be customized as well as adding any number of new tabs, not just one.  Whether you want to hide a seldom used tab for your workflow, move the roam controls further to the left of the home tab, or add a keyboard shortcut so Control-M brings up image metadata, it will be possible through ribbon customization.  We also hope to ship with some pre-canned layouts for common uses, such as for Image Analysts.

This technology is already being used to create new interfaces for specialized products such as Spatial Model Editor for GeoMedia and some new workflow specific tools.  We have used it internally to create a layout that makes ERDAS IMAGINE easier to use on a touch screen, such as a windows tablet.  Ribbon customization will have a presence in the next version of ERDAS IMAGINE, so be on the lookout later this year.
