In 2015, all members of the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) to promote and work toward the sustainability of life by 2030. While there have been a number of technological advancements that have increased the amount of data available to assist countries in achieving the SDGs, according to the UN, geospatial data is one of the most promising data sources to support the initiative.

South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) has a 74% convergence with the SDGs. As the energy sector is the lifeblood of the South African economy, the NDP calls for improving energy infrastructure in a sustainable way.

Multiple databases have been created on renewable energy sites across South Africa, however, many of these are disparate. Most of this data has been collected in a conventional format that limits the user to a one-dimensional view of the data presented. These were challenges that we set out to solve.

Bringing Disparate Sustainability Data Together

We created our Renewable Energy App to bring the vast amounts of information available across the nation together in a central, synoptic way while simultaneously contributing to the conversation around renewable energy in South Africa.

Our solution, built with Hexagon’s M.App Enterprise platform, provides an overview of the different renewable energy sites across South Africa. A smart compilation of widgets allowed us to quantify the areas and amount of energy contributed to the South African electrical grid by each of the Renewable Energy technologies.

M.App Enterprise was critical for this solution as it allowed us to create an interactive, visual experience that is accessible for any organization needing to view the renewable energy landscape in South Africa. The technology provides a dynamic medium for users to interact with the data from any location and device, while allowing us to push updates instantly and seamlessly without having to recreate the application every time an update to the information is available.
