Remote Sensing – Enabling Our Future

October 4-10 is World Space Week, and this year, the theme is Remote Sensing – Enabling Our Future. This theme is, of course, near and dear to our heart, and we could not let this week pass us by.

Remote Sensing – Enabling Our Future

Remote Sensing, or the process of deriving information about the earth through imagery captured by satellite or aircraft, provides us with vital clues about the earth and our environment. Whether you need a supplement for your field studies, the region you are studying is too difficult to visit, or too large to study in the field, it provides us with the data we need to begin to understand the world around us.

“The focus this year of the benefits of remote sensing is very timely because the rising use of imagery and data is expected to stimulate market growth and revolutionize how powerful tools and data enhance lives and enable a future that we can impact positively.” Timiebi Aganaba-Jeanty, Executive Director

Remotely-sensed data is increasing, in both collection and popularity. As Google Maps and other internet-based mapping systems become ubiquitous, more and more industries look to remote sensing to provide the data they need to understand their business problems. From UAVs to satellite systems, we have a plethora of data choices.

Collecting the data is important. Interpreting the data is vital.

ERDAS IMAGINE, the World’s First Commercial Remote Sensing Software

At Hexagon Geospatial, we have a history of working with remotely sensed data. ERDAS IMAGINE was the world’s first commercial remote sensing software application.

“In early 1979 a group of the multi-disciplinary professionals (including Planners, Landscape Architects, Geologists, Remote Sensing Specialists, and Electrical Engineers) collaborated on the design of a microcomputer-based geographic information system to be used for planning and resource analysis applications. This Earth Resources Data Analysis System (ERDAS) was designed to be used by professionals in application areas without requiring a prior knowledge of computers or computer programming.” From the 1984 ERDAS 2400 Users’ Manual

ZCD2From these humble beginnings – processing LandSat 4 data was, as much as we’d like to think different, never glamorous – grew what is now the world’s most widely-used remote sensing software. ERDAS IMAGINE, one of Hexagon Geospatial’s flagship products, provides an arsenal of image processing, photogrammetry, and basic GIS analysis tools.

With each release, we spend thousands of hours working to extend its capabilities, making it more powerful and flexible. We provide tools like spatial modeler to help you build your own repeatable image processing workflows.

Hexagon Smart M.Apps: Next Generation Remote Sensing

While ERDAS IMAGINE continues to lead the world in desktop image processing, The Hexagon Smart M.App takes the traditional remote sensing workflows and extends them to new markets. Smart M.Apps re-envision how we experience data and maps, transforming them from static images into dynamic information services.

The map of the future is about communicating specific answers to specific business questions. Smart M.Apps incorporate traditional remote sensing workflows into dashboards, giving non-remote-sensing experts the chance to use geospatial technology to answer their business questions.

Watch the video below to learn more ways that Smart M.Apps open up remote sensing to a new set of users who need this information to make the world a better home.
