3301: Innovative Solutions for the Global Defense and Intelligence Community

Additionally, the dynamic nature of today’s D&I missions increases the demand for ubiquitous access to information and analyses by a variety of individuals involved in planning and supporting the mission. Establishing capabilities such as Cloud-based exploitation, Enterprise Search, Real-time Data Analytics, and full-featured web-based GIS are essential to effectively and efficiently supporting these goals. 3302: Satellite Radar Data Exploitation for IMINT and Security
Planetek Italia has designed a computer system using satellite SAR (Synthetic Aperture RADAR) data exploitation to support the targeting activities of the Italian Armed Forces. It provides significant improvement in the accurate recognition and classification of targets by using, among other things, accurate 3D coordinates. The system is based on M.App X, which uses a lightweight web client to provide intuitive tools for image processing and intelligence to Defense users. Key elements of the system: using 3D to increase information accuracy; increasing military operations accuracy through extraction of Ground Control Points from satellite radar data which is archived in a global catalog; managing geoinformation assets through proper storage, updating and accessibility of the data; integrating different types of data through data fusion techniques; and automating the entire process for time and cost savings. The processing chain also provides a geoinformation service to detect and report earth’s surface movements, aimed at recognizing underground activities such as the construction of tunnels or bunkers. This service is useful to control areas subject to landslides and subsidence, and the stability of infrastructures, such as buildings, roads and railways, and is available upon subscription to the Rheticus® cloud platform.
3303: Improved Situational Awareness for Defense Using 3D
Situational awareness is critical for the preparation of Defense missions, and 2D analysis is no longer sufficient. Using modern techniques such as dense matching and automated building recognition, it is possible to create accurate 3D environments of the mission area, and subsequently conduct 3D analysis – such as visibility studies – on this environment. The combination of photogrammetric and GIS techniques available in Hexagon’s software suite allows us to do this semi-automatically. In this session, we will demonstrate the workflow and some of the possibilities. Using stereo imagery, we will explain how an accurate 3D environment in an urban setting can be built, analysed in GeoMedia 3D and served with Geospatial Portal.
3304: Utilizing Advanced and Innovative Radar Algorithms for Actionable Intelligence
To fully understand the situation, you need to use all of the information at your disposal. With its ability to operate 24-hours a day and in different weather conditions, radar data can provide valuable insight into the situation on the ground. SDT has been working on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) signal processing and image processing algorithms for more than ten years. They have developed innovative algorithms for a variety of uses, including national military and international civil projects. Recently, SAR image processing algorithms have been integrated into ERDAS IMAGINE. See how easy it can be for an analyst to develop timely actionable intelligence with the noise reduction, automatic target detection, change analysis and user-interactive ship segmentation algorithms.
